About MAAMI Nigeria

Nigeria is reported to have the fourth highest maternal mortality ratio in the world, most of which occur in rural areas. Among the underlying causes is a lack of information on the importance of antenatal care, low literacy rate, common negative socio-cultural practices, and limited access to health facilities with skilled medical professionals. Our organization is thus aimed at providing prompt and relevant pregnancy and newborn health information to women at their varying stages of pregnancy and in their preferred local language. These messages will be designed to enlighten women on better and safer health practices as well as help them make more informed decisions about their health Increased penetration of mobile phones in Nigeria presents a unique opportunity to provide health information to pregnant women and their families. These messages can be received on basic mobile phones, therefore reaching hard to reach populations while overcoming language and internet access barriers. MAAMI was one of the social impact projects that won a seed grant from the US government-funded Techwomen (www.techwomen.org).
